OOMG Ph.D. student Tianning Wu participated in the NSF Deep-Sea Research Cruise aboard R/V Atlantis from March 4 to 13, 2020. The two-leg cruise traveled from the Gulf of Mexico to the US East Coast to investigate the connectivity of populations and barriers to deep-sea larval transport.

Tianning took part in the second leg of the cruise, along the East Coast, and dived to the seafloor in the Deep Submergence Vehicle (DSV) Alvin. He descended 1030 m into the Atlantic Ocean and conducted a 2 hour observation on deep sea ecosystems. Back to the surface, he was warmly welcomed with the traditional iced seawater bath to celebrate his first Alvin dive.
